With all of the rumors of the new Nintendo console floating around, it is a wonder what the future will hold for home consoles. This is the first time that two competing consoles have declared that they are pushing for a ten year cycle while Nintendo is looking like they are going to stick with a five year rotation. So does that mean that Nintendo releasing a new console this early, while Xbox 360 and PS3 plan on hanging around, will put a kink in the current HD consoles’ plans?
Soon Nintendo will be releasing a much more powerful console than the current Xbox 360 and PS3. Fanboy flamewar aside, it only makes sense. The hardware is much more cheap today than it was back at the launch of the PS3 and Nintendo was turning a profit day one with the Wii, so they are rollin in the dough. There is no excuse to not have the new Nintendo system at least meet the current competition’s capabilities.
With the new console, Nintendo has been acknowledging their mistakes in closing out the third party developers with the Wii and saying that they will have a much more open policy with “Project Cafe.” Imagine having Call of Duty, Mass Effect, Dead Space, and all of the other multi-platform games on a Nintendo console. If this really works out the way I am hoping, Nintendo may just have my go-to console. For the Wii generation I was, like many Nintendo fans, a “Wii and” owner. I had a Wii and my Xbox 360 (and now PS3). Nintendo stepping up its hardcore game could put an end to that.
One thing is for sure though. It will be interesting to see the console war get another group to spout their hate since it is pretty non-existent this time around. And when I say interesting, I mean annoying, and when I say annoying, I mean, I hate fanboys.
What do you guys think? Will Nintendo be able to compete with the already established Xbox 360 and PS3, or will Nintendo’s new HD console force Microsoft and Sony to abandon the 10 year plan?
